Philanthropy

$100,000 $80,921

Congratulations to all Companions and to Rt. Ex. Paul Lockhart! In the 2018 Capitular year, we raised a record breaking $80,921 in donations to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s. It’s amazing what we can do when we work in the quarry together!

Virginia Royal Arch Masons are dedicated to finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. We are engaged in fundraising activities across the Commonwealth that are designed to help those with the disease while working diligently to find a cure. Currently, more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. It is the 6th leading cause of death in America. We are dedicated to finding a way to change the course of this disease. The donations that we receive are allocated to the following charitable organizations:

  • The Alzheimer’s Association for Research in Chicago, IL.
  • The Alzheimer’s Association Chapters in your local area
  • Masonic Home of Virginia’s Memory Unit
  • Your local Project Lifesaver

It is my first year as your Grand Almoner, and like so many of you, I have been directly impacted by this terrible disease. I lost an important family member, Ms. Dorothy Bryarly, who first peaked my interest and love of history and the outdoors when I was little.  Her 1840s era farm was the site of several Civil War skirmishes and it was my literal playground as a child. She was an avid story teller and a gracious hostess to my cousins and me. I watched helplessly as she slowly and painfully passed away from this disease in 2011.  She is greatly missed and made a lasting impression on my life.

I plan to visit with many of you at our Chapter meetings in 2019 and to work with the Alzheimer’s Association to proactively link their fundraising programs to our Companions such as “The Walk to End Alzheimer’s”. The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization for Alzheimer's care, support, and research in the world. Their mission is to eliminate AD through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Support from organizations such as the Royal Arch Masons in Virginia is critical to their financial capability. More information and resources about the Alzheimer’s Association can be found at https://act.org They are committed to progressing new treatments, accelerating prevention, standardizing screening, and ultimately to finding a cure for the disease.

Remember that there is no set script on how you decide to raise funds. You can be both creative and imaginative. You can also involve people outside your Chapter and area businesses in your community. There is no better way to attract good men to our fraternity than to have them observe us working together for the good of our communities in public! The sky is the limit. Our collective goal is to raise $100,000 in donations in 2019. Let’s continue to work relentlessly until we can share a world without this disease.

Thank you for joining our fight against Alzheimer’s.

Sincerely and Fraternally,
Rt. Ex. PJason Curtis “Jake” Trenary
Grand Almoner
